What is contention ratio?

If you’ve ever looked into internet speeds, you might have encountered the term ‘contention ratio’. Contention ratio refers to the number of users sharing the same data capacity. Put simply, it’s the number of people vying for bandwidth at any given time. When it comes to contention ratio, a lower figure indicates better performance.

If the preceding paragraph felt like technical jargon, let us elaborate.

Think of your internet connection as a motorway. At any given time, you’re not the only ‘driver’ on this motorway; you share it with other ‘road users’. As the number of users increases, traffic becomes progressively more congested, resulting in slower speeds for each individual ‘driver’. If you leave work during peak commuting hours, your journey home will take longer – as anyone who uses the M25 around London will attest. Leaving when traffic is lighter will allow you to travel home at a higher speed, simply because the road is clearer and fewer people are sharing the limited number of lanes.

Contention ratio operates on the same principle. A larger number of users means a higher contention ratio for those on the same data capacity, leading to slower connection speeds. Conversely, a smaller number of users results in a lower contention ratio and, consequently, higher connection speeds. But how does this relate to fibre broadband?
